Why do people care so much about sports?

In high school people act like sports are such a big deal. You always get asked that question: do you play any sports? Why the f*** does it matter and why do they care whether I play them or not? They act like it's the whole world if you play a sport when in reality it's just a hobby, like playing the guitar, collecting magazines, taking care of your automobile, being good at a computer... why don't they ever ask you "do you play any instruments?". Why?
